R-410A refrigerant from Ice Cold is the primary refrigerant used in modern residential HVAC systems. It is commonly used to refill existing air conditioning units and heat pumps that have lost refrigerant due to leaks, routine maintenance, or component replacement. Ice Cold R-410A is manufactured in the United States using 100% virgin refrigerant that has never been reclaimed or recycled, ensuring consistent pressure, clean composition, and dependable system performance.

Ice Cold R-410A is used when recharging residential systems and heat pumps engineered specifically for high-pressure R-410A operation. Proper refrigerant levels are critical for restoring cooling capacity, maintaining system efficiency, and reducing strain on key components. This refrigerant is intended for servicing existing residential HVAC equipment and should not be used as a replacement for other refrigerant types.

    R-410A Refrigerant FAQs

    What is R-410A refrigerant?

R-410A refrigerant (often called Puron) is a widely used HVAC refrigerant found in modern air conditioners and heat pumps. It replaced older options like R-22 because it does not contain chlorine, meaning it doesn’t harm the ozone layer.

R-410A is known for strong cooling performance and energy efficiency, which is why most newer home AC refrigerant systems are designed specifically for it. It does run at higher pressure than older refrigerants, so it’s only used in systems built for R-410A—not as a direct drop-in replacement.

    Is R-410A refrigerant banned?

No—R-410A is not banned, but it is being gradually phased down.

Because it has a higher global warming potential (GWP), regulations in the U.S. and other countries are shifting the industry toward newer, lower-impact refrigerants. That said, R-410A is still widely used, available, and supported for servicing existing air conditioning and heat pump systems.

If you’re maintaining a current system, you can still use R-410A—it’s just that future equipment is moving in a different direction.

How long does R-410A refrigerant last?

R-410A doesn’t “wear out” or expire inside a system. In a properly sealed unit, it can last the entire life of the equipment.

If refrigerant levels are low, it’s usually due to a leak—not because the refrigerant itself broke down. Regular maintenance, proper installation, and quality components all help ensure your AC refrigerant stays where it belongs and performs efficiently for years.

    Is R-410A a liquid or a gas?

R-410A is both—it changes between a liquid and a vapor as it moves through your HVAC system.

    • As a liquid, it helps release heat outdoors
    • As a vapor, it absorbs heat from inside your home

This constant cycle is what allows your air conditioner or heat pump to cool (or heat) efficiently. It’s a normal and essential part of how any HVAC refrigerant works.

What is the critical temperature of R-410A?

The critical temperature of R-410A is about 162.9°F (72.7°C).

In simple terms, this is the temperature above which the refrigerant can no longer exist as a separate liquid and vapor. While this is more of a technical spec, it helps explain why R-410A performs well in high-temperature environments—making it a reliable choice for air conditioning refrigerant systems, especially in warmer climates.
