Home AC Refrigerant: What Homeowners Should Know
Home AC refrigerant is the cooling fluid inside your central air conditioner or heat pump. It moves heat out of your house so the air feels cool. Most homes built from about 2010 through 2024 use a refrigerant called R-410A. Older homes may use R-22.
As a homeowner, you do not need to handle refrigerant yourself. But it helps to know a few basic facts about it.
Which refrigerant does my home use?
The type depends on the age of your system. Systems made before 2010 often use R-22. Systems made from around 2010 to 2024 usually use R-410A. New systems made in 2025 and later use newer refrigerants like R-454B or R-32. You can usually find the type on a label on the outdoor unit.
Does refrigerant run out over time?
No. Refrigerant is not fuel and is not used up. Your system holds the same refrigerant for years inside a sealed loop. If your system is low, it has a leak. A leak should be found and fixed by a professional, not just topped off.
A drop in cooling does not always mean low refrigerant. But if it is low, that points to a leak. Refilling without repairing the leak only leads to the same problem again.
What are signs of a problem?
A few signs may point to a refrigerant issue, such as warm air from the vents, ice on the outdoor lines, or higher power bills. These signs can also come from other problems. The right step is to call a licensed technician who can test the system.
Is R-410A going away?
R-410A is being phased down under federal rules. New air conditioners are no longer built to use it. But your existing R-410A system is still fine to use and repair. Supplies of R-410A are still available, though prices have been rising as supply tightens.
Can homeowners buy their own refrigerant?
Federal law limits who can buy refrigerant. In most cases, the buyer must be EPA Section 608 certified, or be buying it for a certified technician. Because of this, refrigerant work on your home should be left to a licensed pro. They can supply and install the correct refrigerant safely and legally.
