R-404A is a refrigerant blend used mainly in commercial refrigeration. You will find it in systems that keep things very cold, such as walk-in freezers, supermarket display cases, cold storage rooms, and refrigerated trucks. It is not used in home air conditioning.

Where is R-404A used?

R-404A is built for low and medium temperature cooling. That makes it a common choice for businesses that need to freeze or chill products. Common places include:

Supermarkets and grocery stores, for freezer cases and coolers.

Restaurants and food service, for walk-in freezers and refrigerators.

Cold storage and warehouses, for keeping large amounts of food cold.

Refrigerated transport, such as trucks and trailers that haul frozen goods.

Why is R-404A being phased down?

R-404A is an HFC blend. It does not harm the ozone layer, but it has a very high global warming potential, or GWP. GWP is a measure of how much a gas can add to climate change. Because R-404A has such a high GWP, federal rules are phasing down its production over time.

R-404A is still legal to buy and use to service existing equipment. As supply tightens, many businesses are planning ahead for lower-GWP options on their next system.

What is replacing R-404A?

Newer systems often use lower-GWP refrigerants such as R-449A and R-452A. These are designed to do a similar job with less climate impact. A licensed technician can advise which option fits a given system.

Who buys R-404A?

R-404A is mostly bought by businesses and certified technicians who service commercial refrigeration. As with all refrigerants, the buyer must meet EPA Section 608 rules. IceCold supplies R-404A in the sizes commercial users need, including bulk options.
